Let’s work together to keep your pet’s health in check — without the stress!

How to Prepare for a Low-Stress Vet Visit

We’re committed to making your pet’s visit as calm and comfortable as possible.

Here are a few simple steps to help ensure a smooth, stress-free experience for both you and your furry friend:

1. Practice the Car Ride

If your pet gets anxious in the car, take them on shorter trips to familiarize them with the ride. This can help them feel more at ease when it’s time to visit the vet.

2. Bring Familiar Items

If your pet has a favorite blanket, toy, or bedding, bring it along to the clinic. The familiar scent can provide comfort and help reduce anxiety.

3. Avoid Feeding Right Before the Visit

For some pets, a full stomach can contribute to discomfort. An empty stomach can also make treats more rewarding, helping to create a positive association with the visit. Don’t forget to bring along your pet’s favorite treats to reward calm behavior before, during, and after the visit. This simple step helps make every vet visit a positive experience!

Fasting (withholding food) is required prior to most procedures or lab tests, so be sure to check with us in advance if you wish to feed your pet before your appointment. If needed, it’s a good idea to feed your pet at least a couple of hours before the appointment.

4. Stay Calm Yourself

Animals are great at picking up on their owner’s energy. The more relaxed you are, the more likely your pet will follow your lead. Take a few deep breaths and know that our team is here to help every step of the way!

5. Arrive Early

Arriving a little early helps avoid any last-minute rushing, which can contribute to stress. Plus, it gives you a few extra minutes to relax before the appointment.

6. Calming Medication

Sedative medications are available to help calm your pet, reducing stress and making their visit more relaxed. These are typically prescribed if your pet is unable to complete a full physical exam. If you feel like your pet would benefit from calming medication, please give us a call.

How We Prepare for a Low-Stress Vet Visit

At Southview Animal Hospital, we understand that a trip to the vet can be stressful for both pets and their owners. That’s why we go the extra mile to create an environment that prioritizes your pet’s comfort and well-being.

Here’s how we prepare for a low-stress visit:

1. Calming Environment

From soothing music to soft lighting, we’ve designed our clinic to be a relaxing place for pets and their owners. Rather than waiting in a congested lobby, we will escort you to a private exam room upon your arrival.

We also offer a private entrance for our especially nervous patients to allow direct access to their exam room, bypassing the waiting area. Your pet’s comfort is our priority!

2. Gentle, Compassionate Care

Our team is trained to handle pets with care, always adapting our approach based on your pet’s body language. We use gentle techniques, offering calm reassurance and taking breaks when needed. This allows your pet to adjust at their own pace and creates a more positive experience.

3. Pre-Visit Preparation

We understand that every pet is unique, so we make sure to gather as much information as possible before your visit. Whether it’s a phone call to discuss any concerns or reviewing your pet’s history, we want to be fully prepared to give your pet the best care with minimal stress.

4. Sedative Options When Needed

For pets with heightened anxiety or fear, we offer sedative options to help them feel more relaxed during their visit. If you think your pet may need this, just let us know in advance, and we’ll make arrangements to ensure a calm and safe experience.

5. Post-Visit Reassurance

After your visit, we’ll ensure your pet has positive reinforcement—whether it’s a treat, praise, or extra time spent with them to reduce any lingering stress.

We’re here to make sure your pet has a positive memory of their visit! For your convenience, as well as pet safety, payment can be made directly in the exam room, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free check out experience.

6. Separate Cat and Dog Exam Rooms

Cat rooms are equipped with Feliway, a calming pheromone for cats, to help them feel at ease. Most exams for dogs are done on the floor, providing a comfortable environment with non-slip tile flooring.

Each room is equipped with towels, blankets, and a selection of dog and cat treats. For dogs who need personal space, we offer private entrances to reduce stress by allowing direct access to the exam room, bypassing the waiting area.

Your pet’s comfort and safety are our priority, and we’re committed to providing a positive experience!

By taking these thoughtful steps, we’re committed to making each visit as stress-free as possible for you and your pet. If you ever have concerns or need additional assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out — we’re here to help!
